California Apostille Pricing Frequently Asked Questions

How much does an apostille cost in California?
Apostille service pricing depends on the document type and processing speed. California Secretary of State fees are $20 per document plus a $6 special handling fee for each different public official signature authenticated when documents are submitted in person.

What is included in your apostille service?
Service includes coordination of California Secretary of State submission, status updates, and secure return delivery. Mobile notarization, certified translations, embassy legalization, and shipping upgrades are available when needed.

Do I need notarization before an apostille?
Not every document requires notarization. Certified California birth certificates, marriage certificates, death certificates, and many government-issued records do not require notarization before apostille processing.

Why is travel charged separately?
Travel fees apply when mobile notarization, document pickup, or local delivery is requested. Customers may also mail their documents directly for processing.

Are there any hidden fees?
No. Pricing is provided before work begins. Government fees, shipping, travel, certified translations, embassy legalization, and other optional services are itemized separately when applicable.

How long does California apostille processing take?
Standard processing is completed within 5-7 business days after documents are received and ready for submission. Priority processing is completed within 1-2 business days.

Do you offer mobile notary service before an apostille?
Yes. If your document requires notarization before apostille processing, I can travel to your location throughout San Mateo County and Santa Clara County to complete the notarization.

How are completed apostilles returned?
Completed documents are returned by FedEx. Local pickup or delivery is available by request, and domestic overnight or international shipping options are also available.

Can you help if my document is rejected?
Yes. If the California Secretary of State identifies an issue with your submission, I will explain the reason and outline the steps needed before resubmission.

Can you obtain the certified record before the apostille?
Yes. If you need a certified California birth certificate, marriage certificate, death certificate, divorce decree, or other eligible record before obtaining an apostille, I also provide California Certified Record Retrieval Services (link: /california-certified-record-retrieval) for eligible requesters.
