Certified Court Record Retrieval in San Mateo County
I provide in-person retrieval of available certified court records from San Mateo County Superior Court for clients who cannot visit the courthouse themselves.

Certified Divorce Judgments & Divorce Records
Divorce records are among the most common San Mateo County court records I retrieve. Depending on what the receiving authority has requested, a client may need a certified Judgment, settlement agreement, related attachment, case history, or another certified court record.

The receiving authority or your attorney should tell you which document is required. Detailed Notary can retrieve the requested available record but does not determine which legal document you need.
How San Mateo County Court Record Retrieval Works

2. I review the retrieval request.

3. I retrieve the certified record in person.
For eligible and available records, I provide one-business-day in-person retrieval from San Mateo County Superior Court.

4. Add an apostille if needed.
If the record is going abroad, you can choose Priority 1–2 business day or Standard 5–7 business day California apostille service.

5. Receive the completed documents.
I can provide a PDF scan and arrange domestic or international return shipping.
Authorized Certified Copy vs. Informational Copy
If your birth certificate will be used for an apostille or other official international purpose, it is important to obtain the correct certified record.

An informational copy is marked:
“INFORMATIONAL, NOT A VALID DOCUMENT TO ESTABLISH IDENTITY.”
​
Informational copies should not be ordered when an authorized certified copy is required for your intended international use.

If you are unsure which copy you currently have, send me a clear image of the document for review before ordering another copy.
What If I Already Have My Certified Birth Certificate?
You do not need record retrieval if you already have an acceptable certified copy.

Send me a clear scan or photograph of the birth certificate, and I can review:

What If I Live Outside California?
You do not need to travel to San Mateo County simply because your birth certificate was issued here.

Depending on your circumstances and eligibility, the certified record may be retrieved on your behalf when legally permitted, or you may order the certified copy and arrange for it to be sent for apostille processing.

Once the apostille is complete, the document can be shipped to you or directly to your designated recipient.
California Apostille for a San Mateo County Birth Certificate
An apostille authenticates the signature and capacity of the California public official appearing on the certified birth certificate. It does not certify or verify the contents of the birth record.

California apostilles are issued by the California Secretary of State.

For a birth certificate being used outside the United States, I will also ask for the destination country before processing the document.

Additional record retrieved from the same office during the same visit: $75 each
Government record fees are separate and charged at cost.

If an apostille is also required, apostille service fees, California Secretary of State fees, and applicable shipping charges are additional.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you retrieve my San Mateo County birth certificate for me?
Possibly. California restricts access to authorized certified birth records. If you are eligible to receive the record and provide legally sufficient authorization for an agent to obtain it, retrieval may be possible. The San Mateo County Clerk-Recorder makes the final determination regarding release of the record.
Can a Power of Attorney be used to retrieve a San Mateo County birth certificate?
A legally valid and properly executed Power of Attorney may be used when it specifically authorizes the agent to request the birth certificate. A general authorization covering unrelated financial or healthcare matters may not be sufficient.

Can you retrieve the birth certificate and apostille it for me?
Yes, when you are eligible for the certified record and the County Clerk-Recorder accepts the authorization presented for retrieval, I can coordinate retrieval of the certified copy and California apostille processing.
Do I need an apostille if I am using my birth certificate outside the United States?
That depends on the requirements of the receiving country and organization. Tell me the country where the birth certificate will be used so the appropriate authentication process can be determined.
Can an informational birth certificate be apostilled?
An informational copy is marked “INFORMATIONAL, NOT A VALID DOCUMENT TO ESTABLISH IDENTITY” and should not be ordered when an authorized certified copy is required for the intended international transaction.
My birth certificate was issued by San Mateo County Public Health. Can it be apostilled?
Possibly, but an additional step may be necessary. Certain San Mateo County Public Health-issued birth certificates require a Public Health Officer's Signature Verification from the County Clerk-Recorder before apostille processing.

Alternatively, obtaining a new certified copy from the San Mateo County Clerk-Recorder may provide a record that can be submitted directly for apostille.
