When Do You Need a Marriage Certificate Apostille?

A California marriage certificate may need an apostille when an eligible certified copy will be presented to a government agency, consulate, court, immigration authority, or other organization outside the United States.

Common reasons include:

  • Spousal or family immigration

  • Marriage registration abroad

  • Dual citizenship applications

  • Residency or visa applications

  • Relocation to another country

  • Social benefits or pension matters

  • Estate and inheritance matters

  • Legal or family matters abroad

  • Divorce or annulment proceedings involving a foreign authority

Whether an apostille is required depends on the destination country and the requirements of the receiving authority. For countries where the Hague Apostille Convention applies, an apostille is used to authenticate qualifying public documents such as certified marriage certificates.

Planning to Get Married Abroad?

Depending on the receiving country's requirements, you may also be asked to provide proof of your current marital status. Learn more about Single Status Affidavit Apostille Services and documents commonly requested for marriage abroad.

Is Your California Marriage Certificate Ready for Apostille?

A California marriage certificate submitted for apostille must be an eligible certified copy issued by an authorized California government agency. Photocopies, scanned copies, decorative certificates, and commemorative certificates cannot be submitted in place of the certified record.

An eligible certified marriage certificate should include:

• Official certification by the issuing government agency
• The signature of the authorized public official
• The official seal or certification of the issuing agency
• The complete certified marriage record

California marriage records may be issued in different formats depending on the county, issuing agency, type of marriage record, and date of issuance. Your certificate does not need to look exactly like the sample shown on this page to qualify for apostille processing.

Not sure whether your marriage certificate is ready? Send me a clear photo or scan before mailing the original, and I can review the issuing agency and public official's signature for California apostille processing.

Marriage Certificates for International Use

The process required for a California marriage certificate depends on the destination country and the requirements of the receiving authority.

Hague Apostille Convention Countries
When the Hague Apostille Convention applies, an eligible California marriage certificate can receive an apostille for use in the destination country.

Countries Requiring Additional Legalization
When the Hague Apostille Convention does not apply, additional authentication, embassy or consular legalization, or other destination-specific steps may be required.

Tell me the country where your marriage certificate will be used when requesting your quote so I can identify the appropriate document-authentication route. You should confirm any destination-specific requirements, including document age, translation, or additional supporting documents, with the receiving authority.

Marriage Certificate Translation for International Use

If your California marriage certificate will be used in another country, the receiving authority may also require a certified or sworn translation. Confirm the required language and type of translation with the receiving country, consulate, attorney, or requesting authority.

When both an apostille and translation are required, the apostille should be completed first so the complete apostilled document can be translated together, unless the receiving authority provides different instructions.

I can coordinate professional certified translations in more than 130 languages for marriage certificates and completed apostille packages. Sworn translations can also be coordinated for countries or receiving authorities that require them.

California Marriage Certificate Apostille Frequently Asked Questions

How do I apostille a marriage certificate in California?
You need an eligible certified copy of the California marriage certificate. I review the issuing agency and public official's signature before processing, then coordinate in-person submission for the California apostille and return the completed document to you.

How much does a California marriage certificate apostille cost?
My Standard Marriage Certificate Apostille Service is $135 for the first document and $75 for each additional document in the same order. Expedited service is $245 for the first document and $75 for each additional document. California Secretary of State fees, certified record retrieval, shipping, translation, and other additional services are separate when applicable.

How long does it take to apostille a California marriage certificate?
Standard Marriage Certificate Apostille Service is 7–10 business days. Expedited service is 1–2 business days, based on document eligibility and my current availability.

Does a California marriage certificate need to be notarized before apostille?
No. An eligible certified California marriage certificate does not need to be notarized before apostille processing. The apostille is based on the signature and authority of the public official who certified the marriage record.

Can I apostille my original marriage license?
The document submitted for apostille must be an eligible certified marriage record issued by the appropriate California government agency. A decorative, commemorative, souvenir, or unofficial marriage certificate cannot be submitted in place of the certified record.

What if my marriage certificate was issued outside California?
California cannot issue an apostille for a marriage certificate issued by another state. The document must be submitted to the appropriate apostille authority for the state where the marriage record originated.

Do I need a certified translation of my apostilled marriage certificate?
Translation requirements are determined by the destination country or receiving authority. When a translation is required, I can coordinate certified or sworn translation services. The apostille is completed first so the complete apostilled document can be translated together, unless the receiving authority provides different instructions.

Yes. I provide certified record retrieval and coordination services for qualifying California marriage records. Depending on the issuing agency, record type, and eligibility requirements, you may need to request the certified copy yourself, have it mailed directly to my office, or arrange retrieval when third-party pickup is permitted.
