If a Spanish authority has asked you to provide an apostilled U.S. document, start by checking where the document was issued. The California Secretary of State apostilles eligible California documents. Records issued by another state and federal documents follow different processes.
An apostille authenticates a public official’s signature. It does not verify the document’s contents or guarantee acceptance by the office receiving it in Spain. Before ordering a record or submitting it for apostille, confirm that office’s requirements for document format, issue date, and translation.

Documents Commonly Apostilled for Spain
Documents requested for citizenship, residency, marriage, education, property, or business matters may include:
Birth certificates, marriage certificates, and death certificates
Certified divorce decrees and other court records
Diplomas, transcripts, and school records
The document’s issuing authority determines where its apostille must be obtained.
How to Apostille a California Document for Spain
1. Confirm which document Spain requires
Ask the receiving office whether it needs an original, an eligible certified copy, or a notarized document. A California vital record or court record may need to be obtained directly from the appropriate issuing office. A privately created document, such as a power of attorney, may need notarization before apostille submission.
School and business documents can follow different paths depending on how they were issued or certified. I can review your document for apostille readiness, but I do not prepare legal documents or select a notarial act for you.
2. Submit it to the correct apostille authority
The California Secretary of State authenticates eligible signatures of California public officials and notaries. A document issued by another state follows that state’s process. An FBI background check requires a federal apostille from the U.S. Department of State.
3. Check translation requirements
An apostille replaces embassy or consular legalization for covered documents used in Spain. The receiving office may still require a Spanish translation, including a sworn translation. Ask whether the translation must include the apostille as well as the original document. I can coordinate translation services when they are needed.

Before submission, check for an unofficial record, an incomplete notarial certificate, or a document directed to the wrong state or federal office. Do not detach an apostille once it has been attached. The Spanish recipient may also set its own rules about how recently a certified record must have been issued.
